Действие фильма «Первая встреча, последняя встреча» происходит в России в первую рождественскую неделю 2014 года. К студенту юридического университета Павлу Чухонцеву, занимавшегося частным сыском обращается изобретатель Куклин, который сообщает молодому сыщику, что его жизни угрожает опасность.
It was all about his notebook, in which Kuklin kept his as yet unpatented invention. According to Kuklin, a certain gentleman, who called himself Scholz, in whom Kuklin noticed the pronounced habits of a Prussian officer, took a keen interest in his invention.
This Scholz offered Kuklin a large sum of money for his notebook, but out of patriotic motives the inventor refused him, and from that time unknown people began to follow him. Kuklin feared that if he did not get the notebook he was interested in for the money, he would kill him in order to get possession of it, and even told Chukhontsev in detail how he would get into his apartment and how exactly he would commit the murder.
It was like the ravings of a megalomaniac inventor who had gone mad, because the patent office had refused to register all his inventions. And besides, he had no money and offered Chukhontsev to work for him for free, also out of patriotic motives. But the young detective just now needed money himself, so he had to diplomatically refuse the strange inventor.

It was their first meeting and their last meeting, for a few days later Chukhontsev read in the newspaper about Kuklin's suicide. But now, after that meeting with Kuklin, Chukhontsev was the only one who did not believe in the version of the investigation, and believed that the inventor had been murdered.
Investigating this case alone, Chukhontsev gets on the trail of the very Scholtz, who turned out to be the owner of the exhibition "Mechanical Curiosities". Following Scholz, he found out that he had close contacts with Major Siegfried Gay, an employee of the German Embassy, through whom he probably passed secret inventions of military importance.
Chukhontsev hits all the bells, reports his investigation to the competent authorities, but for interference in public policy, the city authorities decide to expel the young detective outside St. Petersburg ...
