Narrative:

The action of the movie Hangar 18 takes place in the early 1980s in the United States. NASA space agency is preparing to launch a reusable space shuttle from aboard the "Shuttle" which has entered Earth orbit, a special military spy satellite.

Before the launch of the satellite remains a few minutes, but the mission control center detects a small problem in the satellite launch system. Air Force Colonel Judd Gates, one of the three shuttle astronauts, goes out to fix the problem.

At this time, two other astronauts, Steve Bancraft and Lew Price, notice on the locator monitor some strange unidentified flying object not far from them. They urgently report it to the mission control center.

In the meantime, Colonel Gates reported that the malfunction had been corrected and the satellite was ready for launch, while Gates himself remained to watch the launch from the ship's cargo hold. The satellite successfully moved away from the ship and headed along the established route, but after a moment collided with a strange aircraft, followed by a powerful explosion.

For a few minutes, the shuttle's communication with the ground was interrupted, and when it resumed, Bancraft and Price reported that the satellite was gone, and Colonel Gates was killed, who was probably killed by a fragment of the exploded satellite. The unidentified object had veered off course from the impact and headed toward the ground.

Bancraft and Price are ordered to return to earth immediately. Soon a U.S. Air Force helicopter discovers the same extraterrestrial aircraft landing in the state of Collorado. Air Force Command decides to rush the craft to the nearest military Air Force base and place it in Hangar 18 for detailed examination.

Air Force General Morrison, who supervised the satellite launch, reports the incident to Gordon Kane, an advisor to the President of the United States. Kane orders the general to classify the UFO for two weeks, until the end of the presidential election campaign. The study of UFOs must be conducted in the regime of special secrecy.

NASA Deputy Director Harry Forbes is appointed to head the UFO Study Group. The general offers to bring in the course of the case and astronauts: Bancraft and Price, because they were the main witnesses of the collision of the satellite with a UFO. But Kane rejects Morrison's request.

And to prevent Bancraft and Price from proving anything, they are charged with the death of the satellite and their comrade Colonel Gates. Bancraft and Price try to find the radar records, but someone's careful hand deleted them. Steve and Lew themselves take on the search for UFOs, but they are followed by CIA agents, with orders to stop all attempts of astronauts to find out the truth about UFOs by any means.

In this fight, Price is killed, and Banecraft manages to evade pursuit and infiltrate the heavily guarded Hangar 18. Seeing that the situation is getting out of control, Kane orders the destruction of Hangar 18. At the time when Forbes' group is already close to solving the UFO, from the airfield in Los Alamos starts a small radio-controlled airplane packed with explosives and takes a course, in the direction of the military base in Colorado.

But Forbes, Bancraft and several other NASA employees miraculously managed to stay alive thanks to the impenetrable UFO hull they were in at the time of the explosion. They survived to testify to the world about the mystery of Hangar 18.....
