Narrative:
The action of the movie takes place in the mid-20th years of the last century during the NEP. The main character of the movie is an engineer Alexey Gavrilovich Barkasov, the head of a large Soviet institution, who is busy all day long solving small current issues, which, because of the bureaucratic Soviet system, cannot be solved either by lower-ranking bosses or even by his deputy Ivan Tyatin.
Such tense and troublesome activity of engineer Barkasov could not but affect his health and one day he gets nervous and ends up in the hospital. The doctor advises Barkasov to take his mind off his work a little and switch to something positive, go to the cinema or theater, for example.
While Barkasov was thinking about the doctor's proposal, his faithful deputy Tyatin bought two tickets to the theater, and that the boss would be more fun, advises Barkasov to take his secretary Sofochka Kutetskaya to the theater. Sofochka has long had her eye on her boss, so Tyatin did not have to persuade her for a long time.
But this turn of events clearly did not suit the typist Nina Troikina, who was hurt by the fact that Tyatin chose Sofochka, because it seemed to her that Barkasov looked at her more than at Kutetskaya. Offended by Barkasov and Sofochka, Nina decides to disrupt their trip to the theater, and at the same time to spoil their reputation....
