The action of the movie takes place in the 70s of the last century. The protagonist of the movie district policeman Semyon Mitrofanovich Kovalev decides to retire. Despite his serious age, Kovalev, a former front-line soldier, wore lieutenant's epaulettes and worked as an ordinary policeman throughout his entire police service.

All the time a district policeman was in direct contact with people, and it was not always necessary to be guided by service instructions. It was important to have a human approach, to know what each individual citizen was breathing and to be able to help him in time.
Nevertheless, despite his love for his work and the attitude of people from the station and his comrades in the service, Kovalev was determined to leave. Having found a house in the village, Semyon Mitrofanovich had already managed to send his family there, intending to live the rest of his life on the land.
However, on the very last day of his service, Kovalev decides to familiarize his receiver, senior lieutenant of police Stepeshko, with the site. And when in the evening after work he was returning home, he saw a suspicious citizen on the bus, whose appearance matched the orientation on the wanted dangerous criminal....
