Действие фильма «Хозяин тайги» происходит в 60-е годы прошлого века. Главный герой фильма старшина милиции Василий Сережкин, работающий участковым в далекой тайге. На участке Сережкина небольшая деревня и сотни километров тайги, где кроме него ни одного милиционера. За такую «необъятную» власть местные жители прозвали его хозяином тайги.
Although the Soviet sheriff's area was huge, it was quite peaceful. Of all the incidents, there were fights between village boys and visiting rafters over local girls. That evening, the police officer received a signal from the director of the local store, Noskov, that drunk rafters were raging in the village. Serezhkin immediately went to the village, where he discovered a break-in at the village store.

According to Director Noskov, three days' earnings, a squirrel fur coat and several bottles of alcohol were stolen from the store. At the scene of the crime, Serezhkin found an unfinished bottle of cognac and no evidence that would point to the perpetrator. Meanwhile, the director remembered that the previous evening he had refused to sell alcohol to the rafters, and one of them, Nikolai Ipatov, had threatened to break down the door of the store.
Ipatov, who was found and interrogated, immediately confessed that he had broken down the door to the store and that he had paid the director for the wine. But Ipatov categorically denied stealing things and money. Serezhkin himself did not believe that this healthy and straightforward man could commit robbery from the store. Nevertheless, he detained Ipatov as the main suspect in the robbery case.

Ryaboy saw the director rob his store, but kept silent. In exchange for his silence, Ryaboy offers Sorokin to share the loot in a friendly manner. Sorokin agrees, but demands that Ryaboy leave the village immediately.
Serezhkin learns about the foreman's sudden departure from the cook Nyurka, to whom Ryaboy proposed to marry him and leave together. This alerted the detective, because the foreman earned quite well here, lived like a gentleman in a separate tent and had servants.
Serezhkin visits Ryaboy, who treats the detective to cognac on the occasion of his departure. From this meeting, Serezhkin, unnoticed by Ryaboy, takes a bottle cap, which he compares with the one he found in the store: they turned out to be identical. The district police officer decides not to detain Ryaboy, but to catch him red-handed when he takes the goods out of hiding and tries to safely hide in the taiga with them.
Noskov learns about the ambush being prepared and, armed with a hunting rifle, goes out to intercept Ryabov. For him, the foreman is now a dangerous witness, who must be gotten rid of by any means necessary...
