The plot of the film The Brothers Karamazov (1968 film):
The film takes place in the middle of the 18th century. The main characters of the film are the Kramazov brothers: Dmitry, Ivan and Alyosha - the sons of the landowner Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov. The film's narrative begins with the scene when Fyodor Pavlovich and his sons Ivan and Dmitry came to confession in the monastery to the elder Zosima, for whom Alyosha Karamazov served as a novice.
The reason for this confession was the conflict between Father Karamazov and his eldest son Fyodor, who abandoned his rich bride Katerina Ivanovna and got involved with a certain Grushenka, a woman whose unbridled behavior had the whole city buzzing about.
Having taken three thousand rubles from his fiancée, retired lieutenant Fyodor squandered all the money with the visiting harlot Grushenka and was now left penniless. In turn, Fyodor accused his father of flirting with Grushenka and spending all his money on her.
Instead of confession, another scandal broke out, which the elder Zosima tries to settle together with his assistants, and unexpectedly looking intently at Fyodor, falls to his knees before him, causing great bewilderment in Fyodor's father and brothers. Subsequently, the elder admits that he did this because he saw what severe sufferings were prepared for Fyodor. And for now Zosima lets go of his novice Alyoshka, because at such a moment he needs to be near his brothers and father.

Meanwhile, the conflict between father and Fyodor on the grounds of jealousy towards Grushenka was only flaring up, and Fyodor already publicly declared that he was ready to even commit murder against his father. Pavel Smerdyakov, Karamazov's father's servant and his illegitimate son, decided to take advantage of this circumstance. He knew well that not only Fyodor longed for his father's death, but also the middle brother Ivan, because after the death of their father, his sons could inherit a large fortune.
And if Karamazov Sr. had married Grushenka, the sons could have been left with nothing. And so one day, after another quarrel between Fyodor and their Father, Smerdyaev kills Karamazov Sr. and steals three thousand rubles from him, hidden by their father for Grushenka. But since Fyodor often publicly threatened to kill his father, suspicion of the murder falls on him and he is soon brought to trial.
Smerdyaev himself, having repented of the crime he had committed, committed suicide, and now there was not a single witness who could refute the seemingly obvious guilt of Fyodor Karamazov...
