Действие фильма «Переходный возраст» происходит в конце 60-х годов. Главная героиня фильма четырнадцатилетняя Оля Алексеева пишет стихи, увлекается химией и даже с двумя своими друзьями мечтает создать птицелет – летающий аппарат, который бы летал подобно птице, использующий в качестве двигателя искусственные мышцы. Ради этой цели, Оля даже продает свой фотоаппарат, который ей подарили на день рожденья, а на вырученные деньги покупает химические реактивы нужные для опытов.
Olya's parents, especially her mother, do not like their daughter's hobbies, but her friends complain about the transitional age, which she just needs to get through. However, the sale of the camera angered even her adoptive father, who, unable to restrain himself, hit his stepdaughter. Before that, the stepfather had never raised his hand against Olya, they always found a common language.
The girl involuntarily began to remember her father, a military pilot who died ten years ago. But it turned out that her father had died, and was alive and well and had another family, and her mother had told her a lie so as not to traumatize her daughter. This situation makes Olya take a different look at such a concept as love, because until now she believed that love was just a chemical reaction...
