The plot of the movie The Captain's Daughter (1958):
The action of the movie takes place in the 18th century. A young nobleman Pyotr Andreyevich Grinev arrives for military service in the frontier fortress of Belogorsk, forty versts from Orenburg. As Grinev realized in this wilderness, he could hardly count on noble society.
The commandant of the fortress, Captain Mironov, although he held a high post, was not of noble birth, but came from a soldier's background. From the words of officer Shvabrin, Grinev realized that the fortress was not so much run by the captain as by his wife Vasilisa Yegorovna, who considered this state citadel her personal household.
Nevertheless, life in Belogorsk seemed to Grinev not so bleak thanks to the captain's daughter Masha. Grinev and Masha fell in love at first sight, and Pyotr thought of proposing to Masha. Seeing this, Shvabrin tries to defame Masha in the eyes of Grinev, telling him all sorts of nasty things. Once because of this, a quarrel broke out between the officers, and Grynev called the offender to a duel.
But to finish their dispute officers could not, in the fortress came the alarming news that in the district began mass peasant uprisings under the Don Cossack Emelyan Pugachev ...
