Действие фильма «Шли солдаты» разворачивается в октябре 1917 года. Уставшие от долгой и бесперспективной trench warfare soldiers dream of returning home. But even after the overthrow of the tsar, with which many associated the end of the war, did not bring good news of peace for the soldiers, the provisional government continued the policy of war.
Discontent with the government's policies is growing among the soldier masses, and calls to lay down arms are increasingly being heard. Some conscious activists propose sending their representatives to Petrograd so that they can convey to the government the soldiers' position on continuing the war. And one soldier, without waiting for emissaries to be sent to Petrograd, decides to go and make peace with the enemy himself.
Having wrapped his bayonet in a white kerchief, he raised his gun and went straight to the enemy positions. His comrades froze in anticipation of the shooting, but the opposing camp was in exactly the same mood. The Germans were also tired of feeding the trench lice, so they happily greeted the Russian soldier, after which mass fraternization began.

Now, at a general meeting of the two divisions of the warring armies, they decided to exchange hostages, who would serve as guarantors of the observance of peace. The Germans sent infantryman Jacob Hoffman to the Russian camp, whom they entrusted to educate soldier Matvey Krylov.
However, the unauthorized truce did not last long and soon artillery fire was opened on the positions of the fraternized soldiers, after which several people remained alive. These were soldiers Matvey Krylov and Ilya Sorokin, German infantryman Hoffman and nurse Olga Kartseva.
Now they decide to get to Petrograd at any cost in order to force the authorities to stop the senseless war and make peace.
But the road to Petrograd turned out to be very difficult and several times the comrades found themselves on the brink of death. However, they managed to overcome all the obstacles on their way and reach the capital of Russia exactly on the night of the Bolshevik uprising. Having taken power, the Bolsheviks proclaimed the Decree on Peace and the Decree on Land, but it was too early to rejoice, because now these gains of October had to be defended with arms in hand...
