Narrative:

Action of the film Above the Tisza takes place in the early 1950s in Transcarpathia. Border guard sergeant Andrey Smolyarchuk is in love with a local girl, Teresia Simak, and after the sergeant's service, which was coming to an end, he wants to take her with him to his native Siberia.

But Teresia's heart belonged to another man - Ivan Belogray, from whom she had recently received a letter from Berlin. A former front-line soldier, Guard Sergeant Ivan Belogray, decided to stay for an extended service after the war, which he served in Germany, but once he saw a photo of Teresia Semak in a magazine, he lost his peace.

Ivan wrote a letter to Theresia, Theresia replied, a correspondence began that lasted six months, and, in the end, Ivan was demobilized from service and went to his beloved in Transcarpathia. On the way, he was worried about how Theresia would greet him, because she had never seen him, not even in a photograph.

At this time, Andrey Smolyarchuk is on duty guarding the border and detains an intruder who crossed the Tisza River. Soon after the detention, the intruder dies in a strange way, although the border guards detained him alive and practically unharmed. And the autopsy showed that the man was poisoned with a potent poison dissolved in cognac.

This led the border guards to the idea that this intruder was used to transport a much more dangerous saboteur, who, after completing the job, thus decided to get rid of an unnecessary witness.

Meanwhile, Teresia Semak cannot get enough of her beloved Ivan Belogray, with whom she was soon to have a wedding. Andrey Smolyarchuk does not interfere with the lovers, but silently envies Ivan, looking at him more closely. One conversation was enough for the experienced border guard to understand: Belogray is not who he claims to be. Ivan shares his observations with the head of the outpost and is not mistaken...
