Действие фильма «Пограничный пес Алый» происходит в конце 70-х годов прошлого века. Леша Кошкин отправляется служить в армию и его младший брат Мишка советует Алексею идти в border troops, maybe they'll give you a dog there.

This advice from his younger brother turned out to be prophetic for Viktor: at the district military registration and enlistment office where he arrived, there was a border guard captain who was selecting people for the border troops. The captain liked Koshkin's positive characterization, but he lacked seriousness.

Nevertheless, Alexey Koshkin got into the border troops, and to his great joy he was given a dog. Scarlet, as Lesha called his protégé, was now Koshkin's closest friend. Together with Scarlet, Alexey Koshkin steadfastly endured all the hardships and deprivations of military service, together they learned military affairs to protect the state border.

After training, Alexey and Alym end up at an outpost on the southern borders of the country. To Koshkin's delight, the outpost commander turns out to be the same captain who selected him at the military registration and enlistment office.

At first, service at the outpost was not as romantic as it seemed to Alexey. Almost every day the system worked, and the alarm group rose to arms, but each time the "violator" of the border turned out to be a bear or some other animal. Once, the border dog Scarlet got into a fight with a bear and almost died, fortunately Alexey insured his four-legged friend.

So the New Year came unnoticed. A festive dinner was organized at the outpost, and most of the border guards off duty were relaxing in a cheerful company. The holiday was in full swing when the first tremors of the earthquake began. At that moment, as luck would have it, the system worked, and the personnel under the command of the outpost chief moved to the site of the triggering.

This time it was not false, two armed spies crossed the country's border...
