Действие фильма «Отпуск в сентябре» происходит во второй половине 70-х годов прошлого века. Главный герой фильма Олег Зилов переживает тяжелый душевный кризис. Со стороны казалось странным, что Виктор имеет полный комплект жизненных ценностей, способных сделать человека если не счастливым, то хотя бы спокойным и жизнерадостным.
He was young, handsome, healthy, had a good job and a beautiful wife, and recently, to the envy of his colleagues, he received a separate apartment. His wife hoped that in the new separate apartment they would finally become happy, but she was wrong. Victor had already cooled off greatly towards her, he did not want children and very often began to seek solace in alcohol, and soon he started an affair with another woman.
But even regular drinking and new feelings could not dispel Victor's mental illness. He is looking forward to his next vacation in September, hoping that only duck hunting can save him from depression. But on the eve of the vacation, Victor invites all his friends to a restaurant, where, having gotten drunk, he starts a quarrel with all of them, including his new girlfriend Irina.
In the morning, a severe hangover aggravates Zilov's mental anguish, and he painfully tries to find a way out of the situation, and his friends, not understanding what is happening to him, decide to play a little joke on Viktor and send him a funeral wreath. Zilov pretends to appreciate the joke and invites his friends to visit him at his "funeral".
They responded with joy, but when they entered the apartment, they saw a hunting rifle in Victor’s hands, with which he tried to shoot himself...
