Narrative:

The action of the movie Idiot takes place in the middle of the XVIII century. A poor girl, Nastasya Filippovna, becomes the keeper of the not young but very rich landowner Totsky. But one day Totsky got bored with a poor waif, and he decides to marry one of the daughters of General Epanchin.

Since Totsky considered himself a noble man, he could not, of course, throw Nastya out into the street, so he decided to marry her to Ganya Ivolgin, the son of a retired and impoverished general. And in order to smooth out for Ivolgin the reputational losses connected with Nastya's past life, Totsky gave Ganya a generous dowry of seventy-five thousand roubles for her.

But a rich merchant from the Urals, Parfen Rogozhin, is also passionately in love with the beauty. When he learns that Totsky is bidding seventy thousand rubles for Nastya, he offers her one hundred thousand. It is not known how this bargaining would have ended if the young but very noble Prince Lev Nikolayevich Myshkin had not appeared in St. Petersburg. He had arrived a few days before from Switzerland, where he was undergoing treatment.

He was young, kind and noble, but very poor and had practically no means of subsistence or profession that could feed him, and was nicknamed "The Idiot". The Prince fell in love with Nastya, even before he met her, having seen her image on a portrait in the house of General Epanchin.

He was the only one who was ready to take Nastya without a penny of dowry and never remind her of her past. Nastya felt it, for she had dreamed of such a noble and pure young man all her life, and was ready to marry him, in spite of the fact that he had not a penny to his name.

To provide for their lives, the prince was willing to go to work, and in addition, he had recently received a letter that he could soon become heir to a huge fortune.

Hearing this, Nastya wanted even more to marry the Prince and to rub her nose in the hands of those miserable peddlers who tried to decide her fate for her. But now she could not do it, because having loved this noble prince truly, and not for money, she could not afford to spoil his untarnished reputation....
