Plot:

The main character of the film The Queen of Spadesyoung engineer Herman. A Russified German, Herman inherited a modest capital from his father, which he guarded like the apple of his eye and tried in every way to increase, spending only his equally modest salary on current expenses.

Herman was a gambler by nature, but he did not play cards, preferring to watch the game. This puzzled his comrades, who could not understand how Herman could watch people play cards all night long, but at the same time not want to take part in the game himself. Herman explained this by the fact that he was not able to sacrifice what was necessary in the hope of acquiring what was superfluous.

But one night after a game, the young officer Tomsky told a story about his grandmother, Countess Anna Fedotovna, who had the ability to guess three cards in a row. She was taught this secret in her youth by a mysterious Frenchman, and the Countess did not reveal this secret to anyone, not even to her sons.

Herman became keenly interested in this story and decided that the old countess should reveal her secret to him. To make the old woman more accommodating, Herman even threatens her with a pistol, but the countess, frightened, dies, taking the secret with her to the grave.
