Movie plot:

Action of the film Fathers and sons takes place in Russia on the eve of the reform to abolish serfdom in 1861. The young nobleman Arkady Kirsanov arrived at his father's estate in Maryino. In St. Petersburg, Arkady met a young man, Yevgeny Bazarov, and was completely captivated by him.

Bazarov, unlike Kirsanov, was not of noble birth, but the son of a mere district doctor who practiced nearby. Nevertheless, Evgeny was an extraordinary person. In St. Petersburg, he studied medicine and was going to inherit his father's practice, but Arkady felt that Bazarov was destined for a much greater role in life than the fate of a modest district doctor.

Evgeny Bazarov was a tough, coldly reasonable young man, rejecting all authorities and critical of everything in the world, especially the traditions and life principles that had developed in Rus'. Arkady, who was simply delighted with his friend, persuades him to stop by his father's estate on the way and stay a little.

But the older generation of Kirsanovs clearly did not like Bazarov. Arkady's uncle Pavel Kirsanov especially disliked the young nihilist. Bazarov responded in kind: he was irritated by this excessive aristocracy and the sense of arrogance with which Kirsanov behaved towards him. Arkady tries to defend his uncle, he tells Bazarov that his uncle is a very unhappy man, who is a victim of unrequited love. But Bazarov only laughed, since he despised love and believed that a man should not be dependent on a woman.

But soon in the city, where the friends went for a walk, he meets a certain Anna Odintsova, a rich widow and landowner. Arkady and Evgeny, carried away by Odintsova, accept her invitation to stay with her at her estate in Nikolskoye. Bazarov is no longer able to restrain his feelings, declares his love to Odintsova, but Anna does not reciprocate his feelings.

Having received a refusal, Evgeny attributed it to his humble origins and persuaded Arkady to immediately leave Nikolskoye and go visit his parents. But even within his native walls, Bazarov cannot distract himself, and his parents sense that he is worried about something. Arkady tries to distract his friend from his painful thoughts, but to no avail. Having almost quarreled, the friends decide to leave the Bazarovs' house and return to the Maryino estate.

But on the way their paths diverge. Arkady decides to go to the Odintsovs in Nikolskoye, and Bazarov goes to the Kirsanov estate. Here Evgeny tries unsuccessfully to court Fenechka, the mother of Nikolai Petrovich Kirsanov's illegitimate son. Pavel Kirsanov becomes a witness to this and challenges Bazarov to a duel, as a result of which Kirsanov is slightly wounded. Considering that the duel has thus taken place, Kirsanov forgives his opponent. Nevertheless, Bazarov understands that he needs to urgently leave Maryino.

Before leaving home, Bazarov pays a visit to the Odintsovs in Nikolskoye and here he learns that Arkady and Anna Odintsova's younger sister Katya are in love and are planning to get married. Realizing that his friend has decided to make a nest and is now forever lost to him and his business, Bazarov says goodbye and returns to his parents' house.

Living with his parents, he helps his father treat the sick and dies of blood poisoning, accidentally cutting himself while performing an autopsy on a man who died of typhus. Before his death, Evgeny sees Odintsova for the last time, who comes to him at his request...
