The main character of the film, Miles Logan, a professional thief, and three accomplices steal a unique diamond from a bank safe in Los Angeles. While Miles was descending through the elevator shaft into the bank and opening the safe, a quarrel broke out between the accomplices who remained on the roof over the division of the diamond.
Deacon, not wanting to split the loot between four, kills Eddie, who falls from the roof of the building onto the roof of a patrol car. The bank building is instantly surrounded by police officers. Miles manages to climb down a rope into a neighboring building under construction and hide the diamond in a ventilation shaft, attaching it to the wall with tape. Deacon and Tully's fourth accomplice, who was waiting in the car, managed to escape...
After serving two years in prison, Logan is released. Now he can take the diamond, but the building where it is hidden now houses the Los Angeles Police Department. Miles tried to break into the police premises, but all to no avail.
Logan remembered that he had hidden the diamond on the third floor. Now, he was there, dressed in solving murders and robberies. The duty officer told Miles that you can get into the department either in handcuffs or with a special pass.
Miles understood everything, he had to get into the department under the guise of a policeman transferred from another city. A good friend made him a pass, a police badge and even a personal file on Detective Malone. The next day, Miles got into the police building without any problems.
But he can't find the diamond quickly, and Miles begins to "work" in the police. He is assigned as a partner to the young detective Carlson. Almost immediately, to Miles's great chagrin, they had to go to the crime scene. An experienced thief, Miles soon easily solves several crimes and becomes an authority among the police.
The head of the department offers him the position of head of the theft department. Now Miles had more time to find the diamond. With the help of a child's radio-controlled car, Miles managed to track its location - above the evidence room. Logan tries to get into the evidence room under any pretext, but to no avail.
One day, Miles took part in an operation to seize a large consignment of drugs. After interrogating the carrier, Miles finally gets into the treasured room and finds a diamond, but it falls into a package of drugs. At this time, FBI agents arrive for the drugs.
Then Miles suggests organizing an operation to catch drug dealers with bait. The FBI employees approve of Miles's proposal, but now he himself will have to infiltrate the gang of the largest drug dealer in the northern hemisphere, Jean LaFleur...
