Action of the film It was the month of May takes place in 1945, in Germany, a few days after the end of warsFour Soviet intelligence officers, led by the group commander, Lieutenant Nikolaev, stopped to stay with a rich German peasant (in our language, a kulak) Rashke.

The German treated the Russian soldiers kindly, and how could he not, since his country had lost the war. Raschke himself also fought on the Eastern Front, in the Caucasus, but was discharged from military service due to injury.

The soldiers, who had been sleep-deprived and underfed for many years of war, could now make up for lost time a little, but they did not forget their revolutionary vigilance. One day, in a wheat field belonging to Rashka, scouts discovered an unarmed German corporal. Nikolaev orders the German to go his separate ways, which displeases the soldiers, but orders are orders.

Having released the corporal, the soldiers continued to be bored, watching Rashke's young wife Gerta. Meanwhile, Nikolaev was celebrating the victory at Rashke's house, sipping red wine with him. Suddenly, the phone rang. Nikolaev's comrade-in-arms and commander, Senior Lieutenant Vladimir Yakovenko, asked Nikolaev to come to him urgently.

Yakovenko and his group settled in the house of a German bourgeois who disappeared in an unknown direction with the arrival of Soviet troops. Nikolayev arrived just in the midst of the festivities, his comrades were taking communion in honor of the victory. When the toasts to the victory were over, the officers began to "wash down" the awards they had long worn on their chests, recalling their military path and pondering what kind of life now awaited them ahead.

The culmination of the fun was a trip in a bourgeois car across the German expanses. Sobering up came when the car suddenly ran into a fence with barbed wire. The scouts entered the object, the appearance of which had a depressing effect on the Red Army soldiers who had seen death.

Gas chambers, crematorium, mountains of aluminum spoons, everything here spoke of the monstrous cruelty and hellish torments that the inhabitants of this concentration camp went through. The next morning, dejected by what he had seen, Nikolayev returned to his people.

Rashke's son immediately hurried to Nikolaev with a complaint: his soldiers had killed a piglet. The lieutenant gave the soldiers an explanatory talk that it was wrong to kill pigs, even German ones, and that people should be killed with weapons in their hands. After this, Rashke and his family quietly disappeared. In the evening, a certain Stefan, a Pole, came to his house. He was looking for Rashke. Stefan told Nikolaev that he had once been a farmhand for Rashke. His wife Katerina had looked after the kulak's pigs and had lost their child due to the backbreaking work.

After this, his wife went crazy, and Raschke sent her to a concentration camp, where she was soon burned in a crematorium.

Stefan told that the Germans used the ashes of the burned corpses as fertilizer, scattering them over the fields. Hearing this, Nikolaev orders to immediately find Rashke and bring him to him, but he had already managed to disappear in an unknown direction.

Soon two more Germans, also concentration camp prisoners, wandered into the Raschke farm.
