Plot of the film No Way Back:

The former commander of the Bereznyansk garrison, Major Toporkov, escapes from a German concentration camp near Desnyansk. He knew that for escaping, the Germans would shoot every fifth of his comrades out of a hundred. They knew this in the camp, but they helped Toporkov escape.

Near the camp in the forest the Germans were building an airfield for long-range aviation, which they planned to use to bomb Moscow, and this had to be stopped immediately. An uprising was being prepared in the camp, and for this they needed weapons. Toporkov, who served in these places, could help in this matter like no one else, so the choice fell on him.

In the forest, the major stumbles upon partisans and tells the detachment commander about the situation. However, the commander was forced to refuse Toporkov. Several of his groups sent on missions had not returned. An ambush awaited them in the forest, and this led to the idea that a fascist agent was operating in the detachment.

Sending a convoy with weapons when there was an enemy provocateur in the unit meant inevitable death of people. The commander could not do this...

But Toporkov offers a way out of the situation. To do this, it was necessary to organize two convoys, one of which would be false. Since the formation of the convoy would be on a voluntary basis, the provocateur would certainly try to get into it.

So Toporkov killed two birds with one stone. With his false convoy he distracted the Germans from the real convoy and kept the provocateur under control. However, the people from his unit knew nothing of this. They were sure that they were accompanying a convoy with weapons to the Kochetovsky partisan detachment.

Only Toporkov knew that they were heading towards almost certain death; there was no way back for all of them...
