The main characters of the film, Martin Brest and Rudy Wurlitzer, are friends in misfortune. They have just undergone a medical examination, and the doctors have given them a disappointing diagnosis. Martin has a brain tumor the size of a walnut and he has only a few days to live. Rudy has bone sarcoma in the final stage.
Finding themselves in the same ward, the guys decide to get drunk out of grief. In the conversation, Rudi said that he had never been to the sea in his life. Martin cannot believe that a man whose death has already knocked on the door has not yet seen the sea, and in heaven there is only talk about the sea and the sunset. Martin decides that Rudi simply must be taken to the sea.
At this time, the owner of the brothel Frank orders two of his thugs, Abdul and Hank, to drive the car - a prestigious model of "Mercedes" to a certain Curtiz, a mafia boss. Frank instructs his thugs not to stop on the road under any circumstances and not to leave the car unattended.
But on the way, Abdul and Hank hit a boy on a skateboard. Not wanting to get into trouble with the police, they take the boy to the hospital. Meanwhile, Martin and Rudy, having had a good drink, leave the hospital in their pajamas, and then they see the very same Mercedes that Abdul and Hank, contrary to Frank's instructions, left unattended.

Martin finds a gun in the glove compartment of the car. This was very opportune, because the guys had no money at all. First, their victim was the owner of a gas station, from whom the guys took three thousand euros. Then Martin and Rudi decided to dress up, they couldn’t go around in pajamas. In the clothing store, they were only a thousand euros short of paying, and Martin went to get the money.
He crossed the street, entered the nearest bank and, threatening with a gun, demanded money. The bank employees immediately gave the robber eighty thousand euros. CCTV cameras recorded Martin's face, and his identity was soon established.
Now not only gangsters but also the police have started hunting for the friends. But the two losers are luckier than ever in their last days, in the trunk of a stolen car they find a case with a million euros. Now the friends can afford to fulfill all their earthly dreams.
They settle into the presidential suite of the Metropol and start spending money. First, they make a list of their deepest desires. But the list turns out to be long, and then Martin suggests choosing one by one, naming the number of the desire at random.
Martin wants to give his mother a pink Cadillac, like the one Elvis Presley gave his mother. Rudy's wish is not so noble - he just wants to sleep with two girls. Safely escaping from the police and gangsters, the friends get to Holland. There they stop at the nearest brothel so that Rudy can fulfill his last wish.
Ironically, the brothel belonged to Frank and Abdul and Hank, who were there, immediately recognized Rudy, who was going up to the room with two ladies on his arm. They were soon captured and taken to the basement for a talk with Frank. Frank, threatening to kill the guys, demands the money back. But they tell him that they have only a few days left to live.
At this time, the same Curtis, to whom Frank owed money, appears in the basement. He knew the story of the guys from television, and ordered Frank to let them go, because they had very little time left to see the sea...
