1942, Kerch. In the Adzhimushkay catacombs, the Germans blocked a detachment of Red Army soldiers, hoping that hunger and thirst would break their desperate resistance.
It was especially hard for the wounded, who needed water. Nurse Masha decides to leave the catacombs and get water from the well at the entrance; officer Sergei, who was wounded in the leg, volunteers to cover her. The entrance to the catacombs, as well as the well itself, are under the Germans' sights...
Ten years pass. Military pilot Sergei, his wife Masha and son Vovka return to their hometown. After four years of war and five years of service in Germany, the demobilized pilot tries to settle into civilian life.
But it turns out that it is not so simple, because he did not have any civilian profession. He was a combat pilot, so the military registration and enlistment office sends him to the civil fleet department. But, unfortunately, fighter pilots in this organization turned out to be useless. As the head of the civil fleet stated, it is easier for him to teach school graduates to fly than to retrain military pilots and suggests that Sergey take refresher courses.
But Sergey was ashamed to sit at desks with young guys, so not finding anything suitable, he goes to work as a loader. Masha is very worried about her husband, because she believes that he deserves much more than to carry boxes, and one day she persuades him to take driving lessons from their neighbor Nyusya.
So Sergey gets a profession and becomes a bus driver. Life began to improve, but one day he meets the same head of the civil fleet who refused him a job. Now Ivan Ivanovich offers Sergey a job in his profession - as an instructor in an aeroclub, which is soon to open in Kerch.
Sergei and Masha are happier than ever, this is how their life could have turned out if they had survived that war, but it didn’t, because almost no one survived in the Adzhimushkay catacombs in the tragic days of 1942…
