Главный герой фильма «Хоттабыч» простой русский парень Гена Рыжов целыми днями просиживает за компьютером на различных бестолковых форумах и онлайн-играх в интернете. По сущности Гена, лентяй и бездельник, по призванию хакер, только бескорыстный.

Gena didn't use all his skill to hack the security of some bank and transfer huge sums of money to his account. Instead, Gena hacked the Microsoft server and replaced the main page of the company's website with an image of a butt. No wonder the girls didn't like Gena for such selflessness.

Another girl, Lena, did not appreciate Gena's hacker achievement, and especially the Spartan furnishings in his apartment, where there was not even a basic teapot. Having decided to correct this situation, Gena orders a rare jug on an online auction site. But Lena's patience ran out when she saw that Gena did not notice the difference between a jug and a teapot. Soon the jug was delivered to Gena's home, but the extortionist customs officer demands that he pay him a thousand dollars for the delivery of the parcel, promising otherwise to inform "where necessary".

Gena is depressed that he has to pay so much money for an old jug. But suddenly in the kitchen he finds an old man with a beard who looks very much like the old man "Hottabych" from a children's fairy tale that Gena probably heard in his childhood. The old man really turned out to be a genie - Hottabych, the fulfiller of all desires. Now, in exchange for Gena freeing him from the jug in which he spent thousands of years in captivity, Hottabych promises to fulfill his three most cherished wishes.

Meanwhile, clouds are gathering over Gena. The FSB received information from American colleagues about an unknown hacker from Moscow hacking a Microsoft server. To help Russian detectives, the US sends an experienced hacker, a young girl named Annie. Annie quickly figured out the possible hacker through her hacker channels and wrote him a message inviting them to meet.

Gena readily agrees and makes a date with Annie in the evening on Red Square. To insure against failure, Gena asks Hottabych to make Annie fall in love with him. But he is forced to refuse Gena, he can only fulfill material desires. Then Gena asks Hottabych to "print" him "who knows how many" copies of a hundred-dollar bill, so that he can appear before Annie in a new car and pay off the extortionist customs officer.

While Gena was getting to know Annie, he sent his new friend Hottabych to an internet cafe, where, under the guidance of Gena's hacker friends, he learned to play "counter" and meet girls online.

On one of the sites, Khottabych meets a virtual girl, "Kisa", and falls in love with her, and having fallen in love, he decides to become a simple person. But Gena is forced to disappoint his new friend that "Kisa" is not a person, but a robot. Then Khottabych asks Gena to send him to the Internet, and for this, his genetic code must be deciphered.

At this time, Hottabych's antipode Shaitanych (the destroyer of desires), who was chasing him and decided to neutralize all wish-fulfillers so that a worldwide "failure" would come to earth, finally caught the last Hottabych in a jug.

Gena and Annie must now save the world from "failure" and decipher Hottabych's genetic code. They finally succeed and Hottabych teleports to the Internet, where he fights and defeats Shaitanych, after which he finds his virtual "Kisa"...
