The film takes place in 1846. Against the backdrop of increasing Irish migration to the United States, ethnic confrontations between emigrants and representatives of the so-called indigenous population of America occur.

In New York, in a street confrontation with a gang of a certain "Butcher", who called themselves "natives", the leader of the Irish, priest Vallon, dies.

He dies at the hands of the "Butcher" in front of his own son Amsterdam, who miraculously manages to escape and avoid his father's fate.

Sixteen years later, Amsterdam returns to New York with a strong desire to avenge his father. At this time, a bloody war has begun in America. civil war between the North and the South. And in the very heart of the USA, New York, there was an equally fierce war for spheres of influence between numerous gangs formed on an ethnic basis.
