Plot:
September 1945. Demobilized from the army, tank sergeant Ignat arrives at the remote Siberian railway station Krai, where he was sent as a locomotive repairman. Ignat was a machinist by profession, but due to an accident before the war, he was suspended from driving locomotives. However, now, having returned from the war as a winner, he had no intention of repairing locomotives, but of returning to work as a machinist.
This was facilitated by the very situation at the Krai station, since he was the only one here who had served at the front, while the rest of the residents of the station settlement were exiled settlers, those who were, in one way or another, if not considered enemies of the people, then were clearly socially alien and unreliable elements.
There were criminals here, and those who had been in the occupied territories and who had worked for the Germans in Germany, and all of them immediately took a dislike to the former front-line soldier, who treated them with obvious disgust.
The only person Ignat showed sympathy for was a German girl named Elsa, who lived the entire war in an abandoned steam locomotive in Taiga. The locals did not believe that it was possible to survive four years in Taiga and called Elsa a "dead person."
Even before the war, Elsa, her engineer father and brother Gustav arrived at the Krai station, but one day they were taken away from NKVDWhile trying to escape, her brother and father died, and Elsa miraculously managed to escape and hide in an abandoned steam locomotive in the Taiga, where Ignat found her.
Ignat's friendship with Elsa could not remain unnoticed for long by the settlers, who had long hated both the Germans and the front-line soldiers, and had long dreamed of settling scores with Ignat.
Ignat clearly understood what love for a German girl could turn out to be for him, and even military merits at the front would not help. Nevertheless, he firmly decided to stand up for Elsa, and not only before the enraged settlers, but also before the formidable NKVD major...
