Narrative:
Action of the film Thief takes place in the early fifties of the 20th century. The main character, six-year-old Sanya, travels with his mother across a huge country in search of shelter. His father died at the front, but Sanya, peering out the train window, tried to discern his father in every person in military uniform.
One day, at one station, a young and handsome officer with the rank of captain got on their train. The captain's name was Anatoly. Katerina, Sanya's mother, immediately fell in love with the handsome officer. They got off in an unfamiliar city and Anatoly, thanks to the fact that he was a military man, and also a family man, managed to quickly rent a room in a communal apartment.
At first Sanka was happy that he had a father, and a military man at that. But Anatoly treated the boy very cruelly. Katya tried to stand up for her son, but then she got it too. But she had been deprived of male affection for too long, and she was very much in love with Anatoly, to leave him.
But soon she found out who was hiding behind the uniform of the Soviet Army captain. One day, Anatoly gathered all the tenants of the apartment and threw a luxurious feast with drinks and snacks. The tenants were very happy about this event. But the joy was even greater when Anatoly announced that he was inviting everyone to the circus the next day and took a pack of tickets out of his pocket.
During the circus performance, Anatoly quietly went out, supposedly to go to the toilet. But he was absent for a very long time to go to the toilet, and Katya began to worry and vaguely guess where Anatoly had gone. Returning to the apartment, Katya saw that Anatoly had already robbed the apartments of all the residents and was about to leave the house.

Having learned that Anatoly is a thief, Katya was initially very upset and was going to leave. But Tolyan persuades her to stay with him, because it would be very difficult for her to feed Sanka alone. So she and Tolyan began to wander from one city to another. Each time, Tolyan acted according to the same well-established scheme: he threw a fancy dinner for the residents, and the next day invited them to the circus or the theater. After that, he successfully took away all their modest belongings.
But everything ends sooner or later. Once in Odessa, Anatoly looked at the apartment of a wealthy widow, but her apartment was on the upper floors. Then Tolyan took Sanka, together with him climbed up the fire escape. Then he pushed the boy into the window to open the window. But this time, a vigilant neighbor noticed them and called the police. Tolyan took Katya and Sanya, and quickly retreated. He wisely decided not to go to the station, but to take the train at the next station. But near the train, Katya decided to leave Tolyan and go her own way.
Tolyan, having quickly pushed the suitcases into the carriage, began to say goodbye. At that moment, a police patrol came out from behind the train and demanded documents. Tolyan, having put the stolen valuables in Sanka's pocket, tried to escape, but was caught. Tolyan received five years for resisting the police officers.
A few months after the unsuccessful abortion, Katya died, and Sanka had only Tolyan left on this earth. Sanka thought that Tolyan would take him home after getting out of prison. But one day, accidentally meeting him near a tavern, Tolyan forgot about him and, in addition, spoke obscenely about his mother. Sanka decided to punish the thief.
He took the pistol that Tolyan had thrown away when he was arrested from a hiding place. When Tolyan was trying to board a freight train with his latest loot, Sanka fired.
30 years passed. Sanka, as he dreamed, became a soldier. One day in the Caucasus he met an old tramp with a tattoo of a tiger on his arm, like Tolya. Sanka rushed to him, hugged the old man, but the old man died right in his arms. Having torn his shirt on his chest, Sanka realized that he was mistaken, there was no tattoo of Stalin on his chest...
