The main character of the film is a former orphanage boy, Aleksandr Buida, who dreams of connecting his life with the elite of the armed forces – the airborne troops. At the recruiting station, Aleksandr meets a village boy, Vladimir Fedotov, and persuades him to also ask to become a paratrooper.

But the military commissar almost nipped Sasha's "blue" dream in the bud, because the guy had a conviction for a fight. But Buida wants not only to serve in the paratroopers, but also to fight in Chechnya. Most of his friends from the orphanage are fighting in the Caucasus, so Alexander wants to join them. This made the military commissar take a different look at the problem and send the guy to a training camp for a probationary period.

Six months have passed. Chechnya. Sergeant Buida's squad is assigned to move in an advanced reconnaissance patrol, ahead of a large column of armored personnel carriers. But the militants set up an ambush in the gorge. Having let the advanced patrol pass, they open fire on the column with hand-held grenade launchers. A battle ensued. The paratroopers managed to repel the militants' attack, but as they left, the bandits captured Vladimir Fedotov.
