Narrative:

Action of the film War takes place in 2001 in the Caucasus. Russian Army sergeant Ivan Ermakov and a young soldier, Fedya, are captured by the Chechen field commander Aslan Gugayev. Gugayev pardoned the conscripts who had been sent to war in Chechnya against their will and used them as slaves in his farm.

The Chechens dealt cruelly with the contract soldiers. Once, two contract soldiers were brought to the militants' camp and were brutally killed in front of the tortured captives. In addition, this demonstrative death, according to Gugaev's plan, was supposed to have a strong psychological effect on the hostages he had captured - English artists.

John Boyle and Margaret came to Georgia with the theater to perform and were kidnapped by Chechen militants. Gugaev expected to receive a huge ransom of two million pounds for their lives. Having learned that Margaret is John's fiancee, Gugaev lets him go and gives him two months to raise money for Margaret's ransom.

Together with John, Aslan also releases Ivan and Fedya, for whom he knew no one would pay a ransom. In addition, Ivan had to inform the authorities about Gugaev's offer to exchange the captain Medvedev he had captured for a Chechen held in a Russian prison. Arriving in London, John tries to find money to ransom Margaret, but all state institutions refuse to help him.

The only thing left is to sell the property he and Margaret own, but this only brings in 400 thousand pounds. In addition, one English television company promises to pay John 200 thousand pounds if he films the operation with his detailed comments. John readily agrees, and taking the money, returns to Russia. But disappointment awaits him there.

Neither the Ministry of Internal Affairs nor the FSB will undertake to act as intermediaries in transferring money to militants; the Russian president has categorically forbidden making a deal with terrorists. When John, having lost all hope, left the office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs general, the general's interpreter caught up with him.

He said that a certain retired KGB major living in Vladikavkaz could help John. John understands that he can't cope alone in a foreign country, not knowing the language or customs, so he goes to Tobolsk to Ivan Ermolaev.

But since he was short on money and John had promised to pay well, Ivan agreed. Taking a hunting rifle, they set off for the Caucasus. But the retired KGB major turned out to be an active FSB major and asked for 10% of the ransom for his services, without promising any guarantees.

Then Ivan and John decided to deliver the money to Aslan themselves. On the way, they managed to capture the militants' SUV with a large arsenal of small arms and capture the Chechen shepherd Ruslan Shamaev. Having recruited Shamaev to their side, the friends raid Gugaev's base and free Margaret and Captain Medvedev.

The militants give chase and the prisoners take refuge in an old fortress tower. Realizing that they cannot hold out for long, Ivan asks the captain to call helicopters on a satellite phone stolen from the militants. A few minutes later, the helicopters arrived to help, destroyed the attacking militants and saved the fugitives.
