Narrative:
Former student and now private in the Finnish Army Veikko was one of these death-slaves. The Germans chained him to a small rock on a hill, leaving him with a sniper rifle with ammunition, water and dry rations for several days. To prevent Veikko from surrendering, he was dressed in an SS uniform.
Meanwhile, Red Army Captain Ivan Kartuzov, detained by military counterintelligence on the basis of a denunciation, is being escorted to the interrogation site. The denunciation of the captain, who had been through the entire war, was written by his young political instructor, who had never smelled gunpowder. The political instructor discovered that the captain was writing seditious verses and hastened to report this to the competent authorities. The captain is facing a tribunal, but it was not possible to carry it out.

The car in which the prisoner was being transported was bombed by its own air force, and the people accompanying the prisoner died on the spot. Kartuzov himself suffered a severe concussion and fell unconscious. Soon a young Sami woman (a small Finno-Ugric people, an indigenous people of Northern Europe) came to the scene of the accident.
Having discovered that Kartuzov was alive, she dragged him into her house and helped him. The young girl's name was Kukushka, her parents had named her that way. The locals called her lame, and her husband called her Annie. Four years ago, Kukushka's husband had gone hunting and never returned, and during that time the young girl had longed for a man's affection.
Therefore, Cuckoo was very happy to see a man in the house, even if he spoke an incomprehensible language, and applied all her witchcraft skills to quickly get him back on his feet. At this time, Veikko, showing ingenuity, made a fire on the stone using the lenses from his glasses.
Heating and then rapidly cooling with water destroyed the stone, and Veikko hoped to free the obstacle driven into the stone. Two days of hard work were crowned with success, and Veikko tore out the obstacle. Seeing Kukushka's dwelling through the optical sight, he headed there to free himself from the chain. Kartuzov was not happy about the appearance of the fascist and tried to kill him with a knife, but weakened after the wound, he could not overcome the young Finn.

Veikko tries to explain to Kartuzov that he is not a fascist and that his war is already over, but the captain does not understand Finnish. Soon, jealousy of Kukushka is mixed with Kartuzov's ideological hatred of the fascist.
But Kukushka did not figure out which of them was a fascist and which a communist, she simply chose the young Finn and retired with him to the house. Kartuzov, hearing moans of love from the hut, was ready to kill them both, but then decided to just leave.
At this time, not far from them, the Germans shot down a Soviet plane and Kartuzov and Veikko hurried to the crash site to save the pilot. But the pilot was dead, and leaflets in Finnish and Russian were scattered around, announcing Finland's withdrawal from the war.
A delighted Veikko tried to smash his rifle against a tree, but Kartuzov thought that he wanted to hit him with the rifle, and shot Veikko with the pistol he found on the pilot. Then, after reading the leaflet in Russian, Kartuzov regretted his shot and dragged his former enemy to Kukushka's house...
