Narrative:

The winter of 1941/1942, fierce battles are going on near Leningrad, and the city itself is under blockade. During one of the battles, Red Army soldier Boris Korbut was urgently summoned to the battery commander's dugout, where the regimental commissar from the front's political department was waiting for him.

The commissar learned that before the war Korbut was a ballet master at the Leningrad Palace of Pioneers, and therefore, appealed to him with an unusual request: to create at the political department dance group for agitv platoon, which would perform in front of the soldiers of the Leningrad front.

With this assignment Korbut is sent to besieged Leningrad, where he will have to find his former students, from whom the dance group will be formed. Korbut had heard that it was hard in Leningrad, but when he arrived in the city, he realized that it was not hard, but scary.

The people, exhausted by hunger and cold, wandered through the city, corpses lying in the streets. No one paid any attention to them, for death, which was truly horrible, had long since become commonplace here.

Marauders and speculators, who were not afraid to profit from the grief of people who were ready to give up everything they had for a piece of stale bread. From one such marauder, Korbut saves a boy, who ironically turns out to be his student.

Through him, Korbut soon seeks out his other charges, but the physical condition of the children was extremely dismal: not only could they dance, they could not walk. Korbut feels infinitely sorry for these poor children and the fact that they will soon have to go to the front with him, but then he begins to realize that this is the only opportunity to save them from an agonizing starvation death....
