Действие фильма «На дальней заставе» происходит в середине 80-х годов прошлого века в СССР. В центре сюжета два молодых офицера, выпускники московского пограничного училища Александр Прохоров и Анатолий Мищенков. Оба мечтают сделать карьеру и дослужиться до генерала, вот только пути к осуществлению этой мечты бывшие друзья по училищу выбрали разные.

Prokhorov, a hereditary officer whose father died while carrying out a combat mission, believed that a real man and border officer should serve on the border, and only after gaining combat experience should he go to work at headquarters. Having received lieutenant's shoulder straps, Sasha was ready to go and serve wherever his homeland would send him, to the most distant outposts scattered across the vast borders of a huge country.

Mishchenkov had a different opinion about the service. He dreamed of becoming a general without leaving Moscow, and he despised service at the outpost with all his heart. After graduating from the school, Mishchenkov's mother, an employee of the prestigious Moscow GUM, used her connections to arrange for Anatoly to be a course officer at the school.

One day, at a Komsomol conference held within the walls of the border school, the friends meet the charming Elena Myagkova, the daughter of General Myagkov and a correspondent for the magazine "Pogranichnik".

Having learned that Lena's father is a general, Mishchenkov, on the advice of his practical mother, begins to court Lena, hoping that marriage will help him make a brilliant career in her father's administration. The sly careerist Mishchenkov also liked General Myagkov, who reminded him of himself. After all, General Myagkov also made a career for himself without leaving Moscow and without serving a day at the outpost.

But to the chagrin of Mishchenkov and her father, Lena chose Sasha Prokhorov, falling in love with him at first sight. Then her father sends the hated groom to serve in the Far East, at the Dalnyaya outpost, guarding a section of the border with China.

However, to the general's surprise, this did not stop his daughter; she resolutely declared that she was ready to follow her beloved to the ends of the earth, and even took her exams at the institute as an external student in order to quickly go to Sasha at the outpost.

Then the general sends Mishchenkov to the distant outpost, promising to marry his daughter to him and place her in his headquarters if he can return her to Moscow. In his youth, the general himself was in a similar situation: his wife also loved a combat officer, but chose to marry a careerist staff officer and stay in Moscow.

Ironically, this combat officer was Lieutenant Colonel Lozovoy, the head of the Dalnyaya outpost, where Lieutenants Prokhorov and Mishchenkov were now heading...
