Narrative:

The action of the series "Snow and Ash" takes place in the winter of 1942. The actively advancing Army of General Khudoyarov advanced strongly forward, and having wedged itself into the enemy's defense, created a so-called salient, which was now surrounded by the Germans on three sides. The army's further offensive was stifled, and the threat of encirclement hung over it.

And although the army command had a corridor through which it could retreat, the Supreme Commander-in-Chief categorically forbade this. Stalin personally informed Khudoyarov about this, summoning him to Moscow. Khudoyarov was forced to carry out the order, although in his heart he agreed with his chief of staff, Colonel Vilyaminov, that it was necessary to lead the army out of the cauldron.

In 1941, Colonel Vilyaminov led his regiment out of encirclement near Vyazma with virtually no losses, so the opinion of his chief of staff was very important to Khudoyarov.

In addition, Vilyaminov constantly “bombarded” the command with the fact that an enemy agent was working in the headquarters of the encircled army, who was promptly informing the Germans about the situation in the “cauldron”.

In order to verify this information, a reconnaissance group of Colonel Yampolsky is sent to the location of the encircled army. And a few days before the group's arrival, an army ammunition depot blew up, and according to one version, this was sabotage organized by an enemy agent.

A sentry who miraculously survived in the ashes of a terrible fire could confirm this assumption, but an attempt is made on his life. Before his death, the seriously wounded soldier, having regained consciousness, points his finger at a group photo in the army newspaper and says only one word, "bukin", which in the Yakut language means "this man".

Yampolsky understands that an enemy agent is captured in this group photo, but who is he? In order to expose the enemy, Yampolsky will have to solve a problem with many unknowns, because sowing panic and suspicion in an army surrounded by the enemy only plays into the enemy's hands...
