The film takes place in December 1942. A month earlier, the Red Army encircled Field Marshal Paulus's 330,000-strong army in Stalingrad. All attempts by the Germans to break through the encirclement from the inside ended in failure, so Hitler's headquarters decided to help the encircled troops from the outside.
Field Marshal Manstein's group moved to help Paulus and, having broken through the front, entered the operational space of Stalingrad. Manstein's connection with the encircled group would have meant for the Soviet command a loss of initiative in the Stalingrad campaign and, as a consequence, in the entire war.
