The series takes place in modern Russia. The main character is a senior detective for especially important cases of the St. Petersburg "homicide" department, Major Klim Roshchin. Klim was an unusual detective. Unlike most of his colleagues, he did not graduate from police schools or law schools. He came to the wanted list from biology, a science very far removed from detective work.
In biology, Klim studied wolves, and even spent a year in a wolf pack, observing the behavior of the gray predators. This experience of communicating with wolves greatly helped Klim in catching killers whose predatory nature was similar to that of wolves.
In his field, Klim was considered the best master at catching murderers. He always used his head, never carried a service weapon, never broke the law, for which he had enormous authority both with his superiors and among his colleagues.

But one day Klim stumbled: when detaining a particularly dangerous criminal - a pedophile, he almost killed him, for which he was temporarily removed from the case. But while the suspect was in a coma and could not testify against him, Klim was reinstated in his position, but now he had a new boss who was very suspicious of everything Roshchin did, even if it gave a positive result.
Soon after Klim's return to the department, a murder is committed in the city. A famous academic and his wife are killed. Klim almost immediately figures out the killer - it's Alisa, the daughter of the murdered men. Klim sees that Alisa didn't really hide the fact that she was the killer, but there was no evidence against her and the girl had to be released.
Klim immediately realized that Alisa was a very strong opponent, and it would be very difficult for him to put her behind bars. The girl graduated from university with honors, had an academic degree in her youth, and worked in a secret laboratory of the Ministry of Defense.
Klim also realized that the girl was playing a strange and dangerous game with him, she was challenging him, because she considered him the same predator that she was...
