Narrative:

Action of the film Death to spies takes place in August 1944 in Ukraine liberated from the Germans. In the Vinnitsa region, three train crashes and one plane crash occur in a short period of time.

Despite the fact that all these accidents looked like accidents, the military counterintelligence department SMERSH (Death to Spies) did not really believe in an accident, but were more inclined to believe that these accidents were nothing more than enemy sabotage. Considering the fact that all three trains were carrying strategic cargo for the front, the SMERSH leadership suspected that there was a "mole" working in the Vinnitsa military commandant's office, an enemy agent who had access to information about the train schedule and the nature of the cargo being transported.

To identify the "mole", SMERSH officer Captain Ivan Sirota is sent to Vinnitsa. In order to push the enemy spy to take action, information is disseminated that large-scale command and staff exercises with the participation of the entire leadership of the Red Army are to be held in Vinnitsa soon.

At this time, Soviet intelligence learned that the Germans were preparing a provocation on the diplomatic front as well. In 1942, several rounds of negotiations between Hitler and representatives of the Soviet government took place at Hitler's headquarters near Vinnitsa. The negotiations were unsuccessful and ended in nothing, but the protocols of these negotiations remained and now, with their help, the Germans could compromise the USSR in front of the allies and destroy the coalition.

It was also reliably known that the Germans had not managed to evacuate the archives in their haste to retreat, and would now make every effort to obtain them. It was extremely important for the top Soviet leadership to get ahead of the Germans, so Captain Sirota's mission in Vinnitsa became an important state task. After all, judging by everything, the work of the enemy agent in the area of Hitler's former headquarters was directly related to the search for those very protocols of secret negotiations in 1942...
