Narrative:

The film takes place in the summer of 1943. In the area of the city of Stary Oskol, employees of the military counterintelligence department SMERSH (Death to Spies) reveals a group of enemy saboteurs. During an attempt to detain them, only radio operator Kotova was captured alive. One of the saboteurs was found with a photograph, by which the detectives soon identified the local school guard Belyanov.

As it was possible to establish, Belyanov was a partisan in this area. However, his detachment was recently destroyed by punitive forces, and Belyanov and several other partisans miraculously managed to escape. In the process, two poods of gold were lost, which the partisans had recaptured from the Germans, but a partisan agent embedded in the police reported that the Germans had not seized the gold during the attack on the detachment.

This means that it was taken by one of those who managed to escape, and most likely Belyanov, since it was his photo that was found on the enemy saboteur. Belyanov was put under surveillance, but soon a response to the request from the center comes, which opens up completely different prospects for this case.

It turns out that Belyanov is a former nuclear physicist from the Kharkov Radiotechnical Institute, Shibalin, who before the war conducted experiments on nuclear fission and created an installation similar to a modern nuclear reactor.

However, soon after this, Shibalin was arrested as an enemy of the people and sent to a camp. On the way, he managed to escape and, under the name of Belyanov, gain a foothold in Stary Oskol, and then the war...

Now the Smershovites understood the Germans’ interest in Shibalin: in occupied Kharkov they had discovered Shibalin’s installation and now hoped to use it to create a weapon that could change the entire course of the war…
