Narrative:

The action of the series takes place in 1942. In the center of the plot of the life and fate of people who fell on the share of the most severe tests of war, hunger, repression, fear, shame and cowardice on the one hand, courage and heroism on the other. The Battle of Stalingrad, the bloodiest battle in the history of mankind, was fought in those days, which became the turning point of the Second World War and the entire post-war history.

While soldiers and officers were fighting in Stalingrad for every street and every house, the best Soviet scientists on the home front were working on the development of atomic weapons.

Just like on the front, here on the home front, anyone could turn from a hero into an enemy and a traitor overnight, with all the consequences for himself and his family members.

Victor Pavlovich Shtrum, a talented nuclear physicist, who mathematically substantiated the concept of nuclear fission, falls into disfavor with his superiors for trying to defend his subordinates, who were unjustifiably slandered for espionage and treason.

Soon Strum was removed from the leadership of the laboratory and even dismissed from the institute. All his former colleagues, even those whom he had tried to protect at the risk of his position, were alienated from him, and now, shuddering at every knock on the door, Strum waited with dread for someone to come for him.

However, there was no knock on the door, but a phone call. Personally, Comrade Stalin, who spoke highly of Shtrum's work, and, of course, after this historic call, Viktor Pavlovich was not only reinstated at work, but also promoted. As if nothing had happened, the respect of his colleagues and superiors returned to him, and now it seemed that the worst was over.

Soon, however, Strum faced a new difficult choice: to sign or not to sign the letter condemning the doctors, who were accused of espionage and treason? Refusal to sign meant that sooner or later he himself would be written up as a spy, and to sign would mean to save himself and his family, but how could he respect himself?
