Plot:

Действие сериала «Пепел» разворачивается в конце 30-х годов. В советском союзе происходит mass purge from the "enemies" of the people, and at the final stage the Red Army falls under the axe. Captain Igor Petrov is urgently recalled from his next vacation, and he understands what may follow. Most of his fellow commanders have already been arrested, and now it is probably his turn.

His wife Rita, sensing her husband's anxiety, suggests leaving and hiding somewhere, but Igor understands that it is practically impossible to disappear without a trace in the country of the victorious proletariat. This could be done if they had a lot of money, but without money it was extremely difficult to disappear, so Igor decides to return to the unit.

Almost at the same time, a gang of criminals commits a daring robbery of a jewelry workshop and takes a good amount of money, part of which had to be urgently transferred to the common fund, the custodian of which was the Leningrad thief in law "Ded Lev".

The courier for the delivery of the common fund was the burglar and safecracker Arseniy Skvortsov, nicknamed Senka "Ash".

By the will of fate, "Ash" finds himself in the same compartment with Captain Igor Petrov, whom he initially takes for a cop "brood hen". In turn, Igor, who was now afraid of his own shadow, took Skvortsov for an NKVD agent sent to arrest him.

At night, "Ash" is called into the vestibule by two thieves who were assigned to cover him. They offer Senka to divide the common fund and run away, but the strict lawman "Ash" refuses. Then the thieves pounce on him, trying to take the chest of gold that Senka had handcuffed to his hand.

At this time, Captain Petrov suddenly enters the vestibule and sees the unconscious body of his compartment neighbor, from whom two men were trying to remove a trunk. Igor, still in the compartment, noticed how Skvortsov went to the toilet, taking that very trunk with him.

Using the element of surprise and his physical training, Igor easily deals with the thieves and throws them off the train, and carries the unconscious Skvortsov into the compartment. Opening the chest, Igor discovers that it is filled to the brim with gold, and then he remembers Rita's words about escaping. The situation happened at the most opportune time, so Igor immediately takes off his military uniform and changes into the clothes of "Ash". The unconscious Senka Petrov himself is dressed in his uniform, and leaves his commander's book with him.
