In the German-occupied territory, there is an Abwehr intelligence school, led by the famous war criminal Otto Geldrich. Soviet counterintelligence had been hunting for Geldrich for a long time, but to no avail. And then one day, two saboteurs fell into the hands of the NKVD.

One of them, former Red Army soldier Marchenko, voluntarily surrendered and willingly gave evidence to the investigation. Having good drawing skills, Marchenko not only drew a detailed diagram of the location of the intelligence school, but also depicted portraits of the unit's officials. Including the notorious Geldrich.

The second saboteur was more difficult. Pyotr Istomin, a burglar and repeat offender nicknamed "Schelkun", had not yet made contact. But the NKVD was counting on him. After all, unlike Marchenko, who was a radio operator, Istomin had to return to school after completing the mission.

State Security Captain Alexei Khromov hoped that he would be able to re-recruit Istomin. After which, on his orders, he would have to eliminate Geldrich. However, while attempting to escape, "Schelkun" dies, and all the work done goes down the drain.

However, Khromov does not give up. He learns that the deceased Peter had a twin brother, Pavel, who was serving an exile at the time. But unlike his brother, Pavel was a modest school teacher. Who not only had no military training, but had never fought in his life.

But even if it were possible to make a saboteur out of him in a short period of time, how would one make him act? After all, Istomin would most likely lose heart and fail to complete the task. And the worst thing would be that he would simply surrender to the enemy.

But Khromov found a way out here too. The thing is that Pavel had recently gotten together with another "free spirit" named Lida and adopted her son Seryozha. After his parents' arrest and his brother's death, Lida and Seryozha were the closest people to him, and he was ready to do anything for them.

Thus, the modest teacher Pavel Istomin became a secret agent of the NKVD with the call sign "Apostle". Only Khromov and his immediate superior, Commissar Demin, knew about his mission...
