Plot:
Action of the film First after God takes place in 1944, in a small Finnish town where a brigade of Soviet submarines is stationed.
The medium-class submarine S-113 returned from a combat mission. The vessel's commander, Lieutenant-Captain Alexander Marinin, reports to the brigade commander that while carrying out a combat mission, the submarine destroyed an enemy vessel with a displacement of eight tons. The brigade commander already knew from the Sovinformburo report that the German vessel Princess Greta had been destroyed.
For this, the brigade commander promises to petition Marinin to award him the title of "Hero of the Soviet Union", and the submarine the title of Guards. According to tradition, those who returned from a combat mission are honored on shore by their comrades. For this purpose, a luxurious dinner is set in the officers' mess. After dinner, the officers are going to have some more fun in the city, in a Swedish restaurant.
This time the brigade commander was not against supporting his subordinates. But at the moment when he was about to leave his office, the gloomy state security major Sharabidze, who had recently arrived to take up the post of chief of the brigade's special department, came to him. The major was interested in Alexander Marinin.

He told the brigade commander that Marinin was from the nobility, his father was a former Tsarist naval admiral, and was shot along with his mother as an enemy of the Soviet regime back in 1929. And his brother, Roman Marinin, served under Kolchak. At present, the brother is hiding in these parts. Major Sharabidze, who had old scores to settle with the Marinin family, was pursuing the goal of destroying the last of the Marinin family.
He knew that the information about his brother, reported to the brigade commander, would reach Alexander. In addition, Sharabidze called him for a conversation, asking about his brother. But Alexander said that his brother Roman had died. As if by the way, the major takes Marinin to the cell where the young sailor, arrested for attempted self-mutilation, was sitting.
Sharabidze reported that this was the last coward who would fight everything, but the sailor flatly refused to renounce his father, the former priest, even at the cost of saving his life. The major calculated this psychological effect, which would force Alexander to act - to look for his brother. After all, the hero Marinin once renounced his family in order to enter the naval school.
Alexander really felt very ashamed, and he rushed to look for his brother, who was shot back in 1925. While searching for his brother, through NKVD agents recruited among the local population, Marinin falls into an ambush organized by Sharabidze. But Major fails to complete the matter.
When the boat with the prisoner approached the shore, the entrance to the bay was blocked by the S-113, and from the other side a boat with the brigade commander was approaching. The brigade commander conveyed to the major the fleet commander's order that Captain Marinin's submarine urgently needed to go on a combat mission: a large German convoy had been detected.
Sharabidze agrees to release Marinin temporarily, on the brigade commander's word of honor. During this campaign, Marinin sinks the German liner "Atila" with a displacement of twenty-five thousand tons, and upon his return, Sharabidze does not risk arresting the hero, who was now known not only to the country, but to the whole world...
