Narrative:

Before his death, an old miller gathered his three sons to announce his will to them. To the two oldest sons the miller bequeathed the mill and to the youngest son Pierre his old cat. The father says that Pierre is very lucky with his inheritance and advises him to obey the wise cat in everything.

In addition, his father tells Pierre to find a piece of red leather in the attic and make boots for the cat out of it. Pierre is saddened by this rich "inheritance", for the other brothers have inherited his father's mill, and he has only an old cat. But the cat tells Pierre not to despair and not to lose heart.

He was also in love with the princess and longed for her as a wife, so he took all measures to neutralize all the princess's suitors. There were hardly any young men left in the kingdom. The chamberlain tried to make a drug with which he could turn all the princess's suitors into toads. The chamberlain had an evil ogre in his service, to whom he promised to feed all the princess's suitors turned into toads. The ogre had the ability to transform himself into different animals, except for the swan he wanted to turn into.

The chamberlain had a magic candy with which the ogre could turn into a swan. But the chamberlain kept it in his possession for the time being, forcing the ogre to dance to his own tune. Meanwhile, the cat in boots began to act. First, he paid a visit to the king in the guise of a certain Baron de Gutierre, and on behalf of his master, the rich and powerful Marquis de Carabas, presented the king and queen with several partridges.

The queen was very interested in the wealth of the mysterious marquis and wanted to meet him very much, for soon the king was giving a ball in the palace in honor of his daughter, the princess. The next morning the king, queen and chamberlain went for a walk. By the river they meet their guest from yesterday, Baron Gutierre. The Baron cried out for help; his master, the Marquis Carabas, had been robbed, leaving the Marquis not only without a carriage but also without clothes.

The Queen orders the chamberlain to take the Marquis to the palace and give him new clothes. Soon Pierre, in his new clothes, appeared at a ball in front of the princess, who liked him very much. Seeing the princess's fascination with Pierre, the chamberlain decided to expose this self-appointed marquis. He reports his doubts about the Marquis to the Queen, who announces to the Marquis that tomorrow he will be appointed a test: he will have to show his castle.

The cat advises Pierre to go to bed, and in the morning he tells him to take the King and Queen to the castle of the ogre, whom he will try to get rid of by that time. The cat did get rid of the ogre: he gave him a magic candy, which he had stolen from the chamberlain.

But the ogre has turned into a goose instead of a swan. The chamberlain uses the last resort to get rid of his rival, he presents Pierre's brothers to the King. Pierre confesses that he is really not a marquis, but the son of a poor miller. But this has no effect on the King and Queen's decision to marry off their daughter to him.....
