Narrative:

The film takes place in the mid-80s. The Soviet orbital station Salyut 7, controlled from the ground by the Mission Control Center (MCC), suddenly lost contact. It was expected that in three months the uncontrolled station would fall to the ground.

However, information was soon received that the Americans were planning to send into orbit a manned reusable spacecraft, the Shuttle, in less than a month, one of the crew members of which would be a French cosmonaut who had previously worked on the Soviet station Salyut 7.

Fearing that the Americans would capture Salyut 7, and along with it advanced Soviet technology, the country's top leadership decided to send a rocket to the station and destroy it.

However, flight director Valery Shubin proposes sending a ship with cosmonauts to Salyut 7, who would be able to inspect the station and, if possible, eliminate the malfunctions, and if that fails, dump it into the ocean.

Shubin convinces the management to give him a chance, realizing that he is risking not only his career, because theoretically it could be done, but in practice it was very difficult due to the chaotic rotation of the station.

It was decided to conduct training on a simulator, but even under these conditions it was not possible to dock with the orbital station. Time passed, but there was no result, so blowing up the station seemed an inevitable decision.

However, Shubin decides to recall the experienced commander Vladimir Fedorov, who worked for a long time on Salyut 7, from the reserves. Fedorov recently returned from orbit, but was written off from the cosmonauts due to health reasons. He took this situation very hard, and when he learned that he was being given a chance to return to duty, he was ready to carry out the most difficult, and seemingly impossible task...
