Narrative:
The action of the movie is set in the late 19th century. The main character of the movie Matilda Kschesinskaya - Russian ballerina of Polish descent, one of the most beautiful women in Russia. Matilda was said to be able to subdue the will of any man. Matilda's admirers were counts, princes and representatives of the imperial family.
The heir to the Russian throne, the young Tsesarevich Nicholas Alexandrovich, was no exception. But, having met Matilda, Nicholas clearly understood what gulf separates him - the heir to the throne and a motherless ballerina of the Mariinsky Theater, therefore, firmly knew that he would never be able to marry Matilda.
As a token of his gratitude, the Tsesarevich presented Matilda with an expensive necklace and warned the girl that their relationship would not go beyond this meeting and there would be no continuation.
But the proud Matilda did not accept the gift of Nicholas, and predicted that he himself will seek meetings with her, will be jealous, tormented, and most importantly, they will never be able to love anyone, as her.
So it happened, soon Nicholas completely lost peace because of Matilda and rumors about his relationship with this motherless girl reached the Tsar and Tsarina. As heir to the throne, Nicholas was betrothed to the German princess Alice of Hesse-Darmstadt, and in the event of his father's death he was obliged to marry her.

But so far Nicholas was only heir, and as he believed, he had time to resolve the situation. It was necessary to find proof that Matilda was a descendant of Polish princes, or to give up the throne and the crown. Only then could Nicholas expect to marry Matilda.
However, Emperor Alexander III dies suddenly, leaving Nicholas little time to maneuver. Nicholas realizes that he is not ready to be Tsar, for he had the right to everything but love, and at a young age it seems that love is more important than anything else.
Matilda still captivated Nicholas with her beauty, and even with the arrival of his fiancée, he could not refuse to meet with her. Nicholas faced a difficult choice: Matilda or the royal crown? Love or the throne? After long and agonizing deliberation, Nicholas decides to sacrifice love to his divine destiny to rule Russia.
