Plot of the movie Viking (2016 film):
The film is set in 977, in pagan Rus'. The Rurik clan rules the lands along the trade route from the Vikings' domains in the North to the Roman Empire in the South. After the death of Grand Duke Svyatoslav, his lands were divided by his three sons: the eldest Yaropolk, the middle Oleg, and the youngest Vladimir.
Yaropolk remained to rule in Kyiv in place of his father, Oleg became prince in the land of the Drevlyans, and Vladimir, born of a slave, the housekeeper Malusha, headed Novgorod.
The quarrel between the elder Yaropolk and the middle Oleg leads to the tragic death of the latter, for which Oleg's supporters blamed Yaropolk, and the younger Vladimir, according to pagan law, now had to avenge his middle brother.
Having gone to the North, Vladimir hires Vikings, and then goes to Kyiv in their company. In Kyiv, Vladimir fails to find Yaropolk, but manages to take his pregnant wife Irina hostage, who was trying to leave for her homeland in the Byzantine Empire on a Greek ship.
Not intending to kill his brother, Vladimir persuades him to come to Kyiv for negotiations, but the Vikings hired by Vladimir treacherously kill Yaropolk.
After the death of his elder brother, Vladimir became the Grand Prince of Kyiv, but for most of the residents of Kyiv he remained a stranger. And the former loyal supporters of Yaropolk not only did not recognize Vladimir, but also burned with the desire to take revenge on him...
