Plot:
The film takes place in the fall and winter of 1941. While escaping encirclement, a group of Red Army commanders and soldiers stumble upon a warehouse of ammunition in the forest, which the Germans were preparing for an attack on Moscow. When they try to blow up the warehouse, the "encircled" die, and only young lieutenant Ivan Gorchakov, who manages to cross the front line and reach his own, survives.
At headquarters, the lieutenant talks about an artillery depot in the forest, and the command decides to send a sabotage group of ten people under the leadership of Lieutenant Gorchakov to the rear of the Germans.
Two days later, exhausted from a 60-kilometer march through deep snow, having lost one killed and two wounded in battle with the Germans, Lieutenant Gorchakov’s soldiers reached their starting area.
It was impossible to move on with a wounded soldier in his arms, so Gorchakov and one of the fighters went on reconnaissance. They carefully approached the warehouse, but it turned out to be empty: probably, during this month, while Gorchakov was getting out of the encirclement, the Germans moved it to another place.
Gorchakov understood that returning to the unit's location was out of the question. He had driven the men to complete physical exhaustion, lost one killed and two wounded, and the task facing the group had not been accomplished...
