Partisans Rybak and Sotnikov, on orders from their commander, set out to find provisions for the detachment. However, near one village, in a shootout with partisans, Sotnikov is wounded in the leg. Rybak understands that he will not be able to carry out the commander's order with a wounded comrade and delivers him to a nearby farm. Having clarified with the locals that there are no Germans on the farm, Rybak decides to leave Sotnikov in Demchikha's house and continue carrying out the mission.
However, the sudden appearance of the policemen disrupted these plans, and the partisans, taken by surprise, were forced to surrender. Since the Germans considered the partisans to be ordinary bandits who violated the laws of war, they were not sent to prisoner-of-war camps. They were not even shot, and the death penalty was carried out by hanging.
Thus the captured partisans were informed that they had only until the morning of the next day to live. Sotnikov took this news calmly and even with relief and courageously accepted the cruel tortures during interrogation. But Rybak wavered.

In battle, he was always brave, decisive and had authority among his comrades. But it is one thing in battle when you feel the elbow of a comrade. And it is another thing when you are slaughtered like cattle. In battle, a stray bullet will strike you down, and you will not have time to get scared, but here death was inevitable. And the worst thing about it is that it is expectedly inevitable.
That's why when investigator Portnov directly offered Rybak a job in the police, he readily agreed. Rybak reassured himself that he would immediately run away and go to his own people. After all, what use would he be dead, and this way he could continue to fight and beat the enemy.
But the fascists immediately tied with blood those who for one reason or another expressed a desire to serve them. In order to cut off the paths to return to their own once and for all. In order to save his life, Rybak had to personally execute Sotnikov. That same Sotnikov, whom he had selflessly dragged through the forest just yesterday...
