Narrative:

At the end of the 19th century, Tverdokhlebov's circus comes on tour to the city of Feodosia, Taurida province, and a young port cargo handler, a native of the Ukrainian village of Bogoduhovka, Poltava province, a hereditary Zaporozhian Cossack, Ivan Poddubny, gets to the premiere of the circus. One of the circus numbers was a competition of professional wrestlers, and traditionally the host offers some spectator from the audience to compete with the wrestlers.

Tverdokhlebov's challenge is accepted by Ivan Poddubny, who very easily defeats all the wrestlers of Tverdokhlebov's circus. Soon after, Poddubny goes to Odessa, and then to St. Petersburg, where he acts as a circus wrestler. But the fame of the invincibility of this folk nugget reaches the sports leaders of Russia: Poddubny is offered participation in the world championship in Paris.

From that moment on, Poddubny's name went far beyond the borders of Russia. And although Poddubny lost his first international tournament: he was unfairly sued, world fame came to the great Russian wrestler. He would later win six Greco-Roman wrestling titles and become a living legend in the wrestling world.

In 1925, fifty-four-year-old champion Poddubny comes to conquer America and, despite his venerable age, becomes an absolute wrestling champion. During 1925-1926 Poddubny easily crushes all his formidable rivals, winning not only the love of Americans, but also earning huge sums of money. But despite this, Poddubny is drawn back home to Russia.

Poddubny tries to withdraw all the money he has earned, but it turns out to be impossible: the managers have put it on a long-term insurance deposit, which expires in 1928. Having no money even for a ticket to Russia, Poddubny goes to a pawnshop to pawn all his championship awards. Here in the pawnshop he is recognized by a Russian emigrant whom Poddubny met during his trip to America.

He willingly gives Poddubny the missing amount of money for a ticket and his example is followed by other emigrants who were at that time in the pawnshop. In 1926 Ivan Poddubny returns to his homeland, where he continues his circus career, performing in arenas until the age of seventy-five...
