The plot of the movie Leviathan (movie 2014):

The action of the movie takes place in our time, in a small seaside town Pribrezhny. Nikolai Sergeev, an automobile mechanic, lives with his wife and son in a dilapidated house. He inherited it on the shore of a small bay.

But one day the local mayor Vadim Sergeevich Shelevyata's eyes fell on the picturesque plot where the house of the Sergeevs was located. Using his administrative resources, he decided to squeeze the Sergeevs out of the family nest.

The mayor's pocket court ruled to pay Sergeyev a penny compensation of 600 thousand rubles. While the amount calculated by an independent appraiser was 3.5 million rubles.

His old friend Dmitry Seleznev, a member of the Moscow Guild of Lawyers, comes to defend the interests of Nikolai Sergeyev. Seleznev has collected a plump folder with dirt on the mayor about his dark deeds and hopes to use it to influence Shelevyat.

After the trial Seleznev goes to meet with the mayor and shows him a folder with dirt, demanding that he reimburse Nikolai the amount of compensation calculated by an independent appraiser, not by Shelevlyata's pocket court.

For the mayor even these 3.5 million rubles were not money, but it was not about money, it was about principle. For this local feudal lord, the common man was dust, garbage.

The idea that some insignificant person can swing his rights was hated by this tsar, and he, despite the compromise of Seleznev decides by any means to put the arrogant Sergeyev and his Moscow friend in place....
