Narrative:
Action of the film Legend #17 takes place in 1967. The training session of the CSKA youth team is attended by the head coach of the main army team and the USSR national team Anatoly Tarasov. Watching the young hockey players, Tarasov selects the two best players to play in the main team.
Lucky Valery Kharlamov and Alexander Gusev can't believe their luck: not only did Tarasov himself show interest in them, but he also suggested flying to a tournament in Japan the next day. However, the next day at the airport everything became clear and instead of Japan the young hockey players are going to Chebarkul to play for the local team "Zvezda", playing in the second league.
Kharlamov's gloomy mood, dreaming of one day going out on the ice against the best NHL stars, grew stronger, as the Zvezda players were not distinguished by his ambition. They were satisfied with a modest place in the middle of the tournament table, and they did not even think about playing in the first league.

But this did not suit Kharlamov, who understood that he would be able to break into the league of the best if he proved himself in Zvezda. And soon, thanks to Kharlamov's brilliant play, Zvezda wins the second league and moves to the first, and Valery himself becomes the best scorer of the second league.
And when, thanks to a goal scored by Kharlamov, the championship newcomer Zvezda plays a draw with the championship leader CSKA, Tarasov decides to take Valery to his team. But this does not mean that Tarasov immediately released Kharlamov in the starting lineup; Valery warms the bench for a long time. Even when, coming on as a substitute a minute before the end of the match with Spartak, Kharlamov equalizes the score and saves CSKA from defeat, Tarasov is in no hurry to bring him into the starting lineup.
Later Valery will understand that such tactics of the great coach made him an outstanding hockey player, legend No. 17. Meanwhile, CSKA and the USSR team confidently crushed all their opponents. The USSR team wins the World Championship, and then the Olympic Games in Japan, but neither Tarasov nor his charges feel a complete victory.
This was explained by the fact that the Canadians did not send their best players to the World Championships or the Olympics. But the victories of the Soviet team did not give rest to the ambitious founders of hockey. And so, at the highest level, a decision was made to hold a series of matches between the USSR team and the best NHL clubs.
Finally, Valery Kharlamov's dream is close to coming true, but not long before the game he gets into a car accident, in which he gets seriously injured. Doctors doubt that he will be able to walk, let alone play hockey, but Valery does not listen to them. He understands that this match is the dream of his whole life. Now he must prove to the whole world that he is the best hockey player, Tarasov is the best coach, and the USSR team is the strongest team...
