The film takes place in our time. Due to constant bullying by his adoptive parents, fourteen-year-old orphan Roman Begunkov runs away from home and ends up at a training ground where a local military unit is conducting combat training.

Having found himself in a minefield, the boy miraculously remains alive, having received only minor injuries, and the commander of the military unit, Colonel Solomatin, having learned that Roman is an orphan, decides to take him under his wing.

Only the army can make a real man out of a person, and Roma Solomatin was no exception. Despite the fact that he was not a real soldier and military regulations did not apply to him, soldiers and officers tried to accustom him to strict army order and discipline.

It wasn't always possible to cope with this precocious young man, and the deputy commander for educational work advised Slolomatin to send Romka to an orphanage, but the commander was determined to give Begunkov a start in life.
