Narrative:

ActionThe film "A Tale Told at Night" takes place in the Middle Ages in Germany. In the forest, where a gang of robbers operates, there is a lonely house, in which chance brings together people of different positions. This is a philosophy student from Göttingen, a pharmacist, apprentices Hugo and Edwin, as well as the young Countess Emilia with her aunt and servant.

To while away the night, they tell each other stories, and one of them really interested the listeners. This story, told by a student, is about a poor coal miner, Peter Munk, who really wanted to get rich.

Peter had a fiancée Ilsa, but he had no money, so he could not dream of a wedding. But one day Peter met the evil spirit of the Dutchman Michel, who was ready to make Peter rich, but only in exchange for his heart.

At this point the tale was interrupted by the sudden appearance of robbers. They demanded that Countess Emilia be handed over to them, for whom they expected to receive a ransom. In order to save the Countess, one of the apprentices dressed himself in the Countess's clothes and went out to the robbers together with the student.

Already in the robbers' den, the student continued his tale about the poor coal miner. Having exchanged his heart for gold, he now became one of the richest and most respected people in the area, but happiness did not come to Peter. His dream of marrying Ilse now comes true, but very soon, due to Peter's excessive greed and cruelty, Ilse was forced to leave him, and then died altogether.

This makes Peter rethink everything, and he increasingly wanders along the riverbank in the hope of meeting Dutch Michel and canceling the deal...

The unexpected ending of this tale greatly upset the leader of the robbers, who, ironically, was also named Peter Munk, and, taking pity, he decides to release the hostages...
