Narrative:

This story happened long ago in Rus', when one stupid and capricious gentleman decided to marry the famous lacemaker from Ozersk Natalia, nicknamed Beauty. But, as is known, Natalia promised to marry only the one who would surpass her in skill and surprise her with some wonder.

Of course, the young gentleman, who had never done anything with his own hands in his life, could not boast of handicrafts, so his mother, the lady, decided to do it with someone else's hands. Three of the most skilled men in the village were immediately called to the gentleman's yard, and the lady ordered them to make a curiosity by spring that would surprise Natalya.

At the appointed time, the masters presented their wonders to the boyar: the old carpenter Makar made a wooden duck that swam like a real one, and his young students Nikita and Ivan made a large bird on which one could fly beyond distant seas.

However, Ivan himself dreamed of seeing what kind of Natalya-Beauty this was, and, having outstripped the young master, he set off on the magic bird to Ozersk. But in revenge for this, the lady ordered his friend Nikita to be put in prison, and promised that if Ivan did not return the magic bird by the following evening, Nikita would face an even more severe punishment...
